It mistakenly believes that unmanaged stress is a major determinant in almost all conditions of the disease. Stress also causes diabetes? Let us study.

Over there are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is also called juvenile diabetes because it starts in children and young adults. It is due to the insufficient amount of insulin (known as insulin deficiency). Since it does not start later in life, we can safely conclude that diabetes mellitus type 1 is unlikely to be caused by stress.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 usually occurs later in life after age forty. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, problems arise because

1. Either the body does not produce enough insulin or
2. The insulin produced is ignored by cells in the body (called insulin resistance), or both.

Discussion on what insulin is and what roles it plays is in order.

Insulin is a hormone that regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates (and to some extent metabolism and fat). Insulin helps the body use sugar. Sugar is the basic source of energy for cells in the body and insulin takes the sugar from the blood into cells.

When we say sugar in the blood, we refer to blood glucose because glucose is the main type of simple sugar in our blood. Our body needs to have controlled blood glucose within a narrow range (0.7-1.1 mg / ml). Below 0.7 mg per ml is called "hypoglycemia" and more than 1.8 mg per ml is called hyperglycemia. Both can result in problems as we shall see later.

When there are more glucose in the blood, more insulin is secreted in the blood, resulting in cells (muscle cells, red blood cells and fat cells) absorption of glucose in the blood, thereby reducing the level of glucose in the blood.

When there is less glucose in the blood, more glucagon (some cons of insulin) is secreted into the bloodstream, stimulates the liver to release glucose it has stored in its cells in the blood, increasing blood sugar. Glucagon also induces the liver and some muscle cells to produce glucose to proteins.

If glucose does not go into cells, rather than one accumulates in the blood, two problems arise. First, if the cells get the sugar they need, they die. Secondly, to extend the period of high blood levels of glucose in May hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart. Insulin is used to treat hyperglycemia that "aspect" Diabetes.

"Hypoglycemia" or low blood glucose condition may occur when more insulin is introduced that there is food in the stomach to be implemented. This often happens when a patient injects insulin in anticipation of food consumption, but food consumption is delayed or insufficient food is consumed. The symptoms of "hypoglycemia" include strange behavior clumsy or jerky movements, seizure, confusion, tingling sensations around the mouth, dizziness, sweating, headache etc.

Now that we understand the mechanisms of diabetes, there is nothing to suggest that stress can cause diabetes (type 2)?

The usual reason when explaining stress lead to disease is weakened immune system caused by stress. However, diabetes is not caused by the immune system weak.

Psychological stress caused by the death of a spouse, a financial crisis or another life changing event was associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes in middle age. Many studies have shown that the above types of major events of life have been associated with type 2 diabetes independently of family history disease, exercise or alcohol. However, although circumstantial evidence seems to suggest such a link between a higher proportion of people under more stress and diabetes, we can not conclude that diabetes causes stress.

There is a theory that stressful events life increases the risk of diabetes by increasing the levels of hormone cortisol and lower levels of sex steroids such as testosterone, which have been shown to influence the action of insulin.

Some researchers have attempted to determine whether stress, which can be measured using the cortisol / testosterone, affects insulin resistance. In the prospective study by George Davey Smith and colleagues University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, cortisol / testosterone ratio was positively associated with ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality and incidence. Adjustment for potential confounding variables and socio-economic behavior had little influence on these associations, but they appear to be mediated by components of the syndrome of insulin resistance (high blood pressure, triglycerides, body mass index body, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and glucose tolerance). This suggests that methods of reducing testosterone cortisol ratio in May improve insulin resistance and reduce the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD). But it does not suggest that stress reduction may reduce the risk of diabetes.

The more conclusive research results are needed before we can conclude that stress does indeed lead to diabetes.
